Roofing, Cladding and Facade Careers | Humres

Roofing, cladding and façade careers extend
well beyond installation. Specialist contractors need people to price work,
develop coordinated designs, manage commercial performance and organise
delivery. For candidates, the best next move depends on the systems they
understand and the responsibilities they want to take on.
The building envelope includes roofing and
waterproofing, rainscreen cladding, curtain walling, glazing and related
interfaces. These are connected disciplines, but experience in one does not
automatically establish competence in another. A useful career conversation
starts with the systems, project stages and decisions you know well.
Estimating and pre construction
Estimators turn drawings, specifications
and tender requirements into a price the contractor can understand and deliver.
The work involves quantities, supplier quotations, labour assumptions, access,
programme constraints and clarification of scope. Identifying a missing
interface can matter as much as completing an accurate take-off.
A route may run from Assistant Estimator to
Estimator, Senior Estimator and Estimating or Pre-Construction Manager.
Progression depends on the employer and the size of its team. To move forward,
build evidence of tenders you owned, risks you identified and the quality of
your handover to delivery colleagues.
Design and technical management
Designers translate project requirements
into coordinated information for manufacture and installation. Depending on the
system, this can include setting out, interface details, technical submissions
and revisions following review by other specialists.
Employers should assess AutoCAD, Revit or
other relevant software alongside system knowledge, buildability and technical
judgement. Design Managers add responsibility for design programmes,
coordination, approvals and the flow of information. Candidates seeking that
step should show how they resolved conflicting requirements and kept other
teams informed.
Quantity surveying and commercial management
Quantity Surveyors manage package costs and
commercial administration through procurement, valuations, variations and final
accounts. Understanding the scope is essential: changes to access, interfaces,
sequencing or design can affect cost and programme.
A typical route is Assistant Quantity
Surveyor, Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor and Commercial Manager,
with Commercial Director opportunities in some businesses. Show the contract
environment, package values and responsibilities you actually held. Be clear
whether you prepared information, negotiated an account or approved a
commercial decision.
Project delivery and quality
Project Managers and Contracts Managers
coordinate design, procurement, labour, access, programme and client
communication. Titles vary: one Contracts Manager may oversee several projects
while another has a narrower remit. Compare the workload, authority and support
before accepting a role.
Site management and supervision can provide
a route into broader delivery responsibility. Quality and technical roles offer
another path for people with strong inspection, defect-resolution and
record-keeping experience. Whatever the title, ask how the employer allocates
safety, quality and technical responsibilities.
Make an adjacent sector move credible
A commercial professional from another
specialist subcontractor may bring relevant procurement and change-management
experience. A Designer may understand similar materials or interfaces. A Site
Manager may already coordinate design queries, deliveries and client
requirements.
Explain the overlap, then acknowledge the
learning required. Identify unfamiliar systems, manufacturing processes or
installation methods and ask what training and supervision the employer
provides. Qualifications and site-access requirements depend on the role and
project; confirm them rather than assuming one certificate suits every
appointment.
Build a CV that shows your operating level
Include selected projects with the system,
package value, project stage and your individual contribution. Add the number
of projects or people you managed, relevant software and a concise outcome.
Keep confidential project information out of any portfolio.
