How to attract construction talent: Insights from 300+ professionals

When it comes to hiring in construction, companies are often laser-focused on things like salary, project size, and perks. And while those matter – they’re not always what sways a candidate’s decision.

We surveyed over 300 construction professionals to find out: “What do you feel companies undervalue when trying to attract talent?”

Here’s what they told us – and it’s probably not what you’d expect:

46% said: Recognition & appreciation

The most common answer by far.

People want to feel seen – not just for their results, but for their effort, their commitment, and their contribution. In an industry where long hours and tight deadlines are the norm, simple recognition goes a long way.

What this means for employers:

You don’t need grand gestures. You need leaders who say thank you, acknowledge good work, and create a culture where effort isn’t taken for granted.

35% said: Transparent communication

This isn’t about constant updates – it’s about clarity and honesty. Candidates (and employees) want to know where they stand, what’s expected, and what the plan is.

What this means for employers:

Unclear comms during the hiring process can put people off. Ghosting, vague role outlines, or unclear progression paths all create doubt – and doubt leads people elsewhere.

11% said: Focus on sustainability

More than a buzzword – especially for the younger workforce. Candidates are looking at how companies are approaching long-term impact, innovation, and environmentally-conscious projects.

What this means for employers:

If you’re doing great things in this area – talk about it. If you’re not, now’s a good time to start.

8% said: Modern tech & tools

While this scored lowest overall, it’s still a key concern for people in more technical roles. Using outdated systems can frustrate even the most experienced professionals.

What this means for employers:

You don’t need to be cutting edge – but showing a willingness to evolve makes a big difference.

If you’re struggling to hire (or keep) the right people, the issue may not be your offer – it might be your culture. People aren’t just choosing a salary anymore. They’re choosing how they want to be treated.

Recognition. Communication. Purpose. Simple things – but often overlooked.
